The National Fire Academy has designated the University of Memphis as one of seven regional universities to deliver the Degrees at a Distance Program (DDP). The University of Memphis serves fire service personnel in Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Tennessee. DDP is a degree-completion program, offering upper division courses in Fire Services Administration and Fire Prevention Technology. These courses are web-based and are conducted over the internet. Each class is a three hour credit course. Students complete seven
fire core courses, three courses in the Fire Services Administration concentration, and one elective from the Fire Prevention Technology concentration. University College requires that students complete thematic studies courses, and a senior project. These are also available through independent study.
Freshman and sophomore General Education courses and any electives may be taken at a college near the student's residence, or online at the University of Memphis.
Courses are offered in a cycle during the fall, spring and summer terms. This schedule is announced in advance and updated each term. Core courses are offered once a year and courses in the concentration are offered once every twelve to eighteen months. Thematic Studies courses and the culminating Senior Project are required of all students; these are offered every term. This rotating schedule means that a student can take all courses in two and a half years. There is no time limit within which a student must take courses, however.
Persons who have college level learning acquired through work experience or non-collegiate instruction may seek academic credit for it through CLEP (College Level Examination Program) standardized exams, credit by departmental examinations or by portfolio assessment.
NOTE: Experiential learning credit cannot substitute for basic General Education requirements.
Credit for fire-related experiential learning through specified training in certain categories (emergency medical services, hazardous materials, radiological monitoring, and fireman ship training) has already been established.
